With January just about over and kids returning to school today I feel life is about to return to some degree of normalcy. Mind you it's taken us a couple of weeks back at work to clear our heads after dealing with the issues of alcohol consumption in Dubai and the other six Emirates.

More of that later.

Trophy win for Rosemount at National Wine Show of Australia

The Rosemount winemaking team is celebrating after winning a Trophy at the National Wine Show of Australia in Canberra last night. The Wolf Blass Trophy for Best Shiraz Premium Classes was awarded to the 2010 Rosemount District Release McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Rosemount Winemaker Randall Cummins says: “I’m delighted with the result. Since first release the response to our regional range of wines has been tremendous and the Trophy win at the National Wine Show of Australia is recognition for the entire Rosemount winemaking team.”

In addition to the Trophy, the 2010 Rosemount District Release McLaren Vale Shiraz has been awarded an impressive 4 Gold and 3 Silver medals on the national wine show circuit in 2011. The Rosemount District Release range of wines highlights the importance of Rosemount's viticulture and the winemaker’s emphasis on the regional expression of fruit selection.

The 2010 District Release McLaren Vale Shiraz is dark red in colour with purple hues. An excellent expression of regional McLaren Vale Shiraz with generous lashings of dark plums, liquorice and dark chocolate, supported by hints of raspberry and spice.

Croser Non Vintage

One of the most famous names in Oz sparkling wines is now a lot more affordable with the release of Croser NV. It first hit the shelves in 2009 and is a Pinot Noir Chardonnay blend from the Adelaide Hills.
Apparently it combines current vintage Croser with parcels of older vintages and we don't think there's anything better at this price point.

Not only does it easily highlight those clumsy little typos but it provides some of the funniest moments in my day.

Usually in the rush to send out a newsletter I skim past the alternative suggestion but when Croser was replaced by CARESSER [wonder what Brian would think of that?] in the recent fizz newsletter I was prompted to record the rest of its suggestions:

Calabria 2009 Private Bin Aglianico

HAVE YOU EVER SIPPED AN AGLIANICO?
It's probably unlikely but it's about time you did and at just $12 a bottle it's not a particularly expensive new experience.Aglianico [drop the "g" and you have a fair grasp of the pronunciation] is an old, old red grape that may have been brought to Italy by Greek migrants long before they ever considered Melbourne as an option.
Vines were brought to Australia by the Calabria family where they've flourished in the Riverina to produce one of our finds of 2011.

My tasting notes were very simple: Whacky retro label contains a funky new age wine. Dry, spicy intense fruit, lovely tannins - will cellar. 5* rating. Now several bottles later I really can't recommend this highly enough. Everyone who's tried it has raved and been astonished by the price. Simply a very fine red wine at a ridiculous price.

Quarram Rocks 2010 Pinot Noir

Quarram Rocks is a beach near Denmark, WA and the label depicts that. While it may be a beautiful beach I just think this wine deserved more - maybe King Kong.

Yes, it may well put hairs on your chest.I tasted it blind and the initial non-winespeak reaction was "WOW! This is terrific" and then it suddenly dawned on me it was possibly a pinot. It was. And while we have plenty of quality, high value mainstream pinot noir this one one is for anyone who wants something very left of centre, very impressive and once again extreme value.

Ridgecrop Estate 2010 Watervale Riesling

I've addressed this issue before.
There are some extraordinary bargains to be had in the unlabelled wine market - and I'm not talking about the ubiquitous under $5 cleanskin
offering. I'm far more interested [and I know you are too] in $30 - $20 quality wines that we can offer for half that price. We're supplying a lot of
these nowadays to restaurants and pubs who want to have their own labels on a range of wines.

Our latest find is a 2010 Clare Valley from Watervale - the riesling heartland of the Valley. It's a beauty on the citrus side of the spectrum rather than minerality. It's deliciously dry, fresh and lively and a perfect alternative to sauvignon blanc.

Once upon a time we all used to say how undervalued rieslings were. Not any more so this is a rare offering of such quality at such a low price.

Head Over Heels 2009 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

This is absolutely amazing for the price and even if you paid close to $20 we reckon you'd still be happy. There's lashings of intense blackcurrant fruit, sensible wood and subtle balancing tannins. Coonawarra is renowned for its quality cabernet sauvignon but it should never, ever be this cheap.

Shag Rock 2009 Nelson Sauvignon Blanc

Nelson shares the top of the South Island with Marlborough but it's to the west and north. I wrote before that it's the best example I've seen combining the popular tropical fruit characters with underlying asparagus flavours so prevalent 10 years ago. Toss in some pronounced lemon zest and more palate weight than most Marlboroughs and this is a cracker. It combines fruit and texture in a way I can't imagine anyone not enjoying. The age is not an issue as it's still vibrantly fresh and lively with enough acid to hold for some years yet.

Chain of Ponds 2009 Graves Gate Adelaide Hills Shiraz

I've been fascinated and often amused by the "geographic feature wine branding justification" syndrome that has emerged in the last 20 years. Take a creek, river, bay or babbling brook and add a prefix which you justify on the back label. And if you don't want anything watery you can always look to the hills, ridges and valleys.
Toss in the odd laughing magpie, idiot, duck, etc and the sky is the limit.

While Graves Gate satisfies all the criteria of the syndrome it has undergone a strange morph over the last three years. In 2006 on the back label of a shiraz that we sold hundreds of, these immortal [sorry] words appeared:

"Two early-settler lasses are buried near the gate to our shiraz vineyard. Their souls seem to keep those old vines alive and perky. Bright raspbery, pickled cherries, black olives, lipstick, spicy sweat,: they're coming down the hills with a picnic basket. Laughing." Greg Clack winemaker

The weird thing is though that, while Chain of Ponds makes a point of satisfying the naming syndrome with a series of local references on many of their wines, this 2006 release was 66% Barossa and 34% Kangaroo Island. This is confirmed here

although you will see a suggestion that the bottle is actually 200% full. Maybe that's why it was so popular.

Moving on to 2009 and Graves Gate has reverted to being 100% Adelaide Hills, and only 100% full, but alas no lasses. The back label now reads
"Named in memory and as a tribute to the families who lived at ‘Chain of Ponds’ from 1840 - 1970. All that now remains of the hamlet is the cemetery and its recently erected stone entrance which protects the history and stories of days gone by." So what's going on? I ask.

But just in case you're wondering, this is a damn fine South Australian shiraz probably even better than the 2006 and equally outstanding value.

Chain of Ponds 2008 Adelaide Hills Sangiovese

My first thought on tasting this is that we need more sangiovese.
Like Chain of Ponds Nebbiolo this is a stunning red based around layers of fruit complexity.
If you just looked at the figures you'd say too much alcohol [15%] but that's not noticeable and way too long in wood [24 months]. Once again not an issue as it seems to be older French oak used.

The end result is what matters and this is a truly exciting red that easily delivers well over the $20 quality mark. It's probably not a long term cellaring proposition but once you've tasted it you'd find that rather difficult.

I was tempted to copy and paste [with appropriate referencing of course] Chain of Ponds website tasitng notes but I thought I'd keep it simple.
This is simply stunning and I can only ask how a 6 year old wine of this quality can still be available at this price today [June 2011]
It's medium bodied, showing some lovely bottle maturity but still offering layers of fruit complexity. And if you want to try something really worthwhile that's out of the mainstream this is an absolute must.

On second thoughts read their notes but I do worry about "thick orange hues"

Ridgecrop Estate Blanc de Blanc

For years and years we have been happily raving about the Clare Valley's Stephen John Blanc de Blanc. It's invariably been our biggest selling sparkler at our various retail outlets and always been well received on the restaurant wine lists we compose.

So "shock and horror" when the phone call came that Stephen had literally pulled the plug on production. So we called for samples and in amongst a lot of overpriced and characterless fizz this little gem absolutely shone.

It's made from Hunter Semillon and I've always been surprised there's not more of the stuff dazzling on the sparkling market. This one is grossly underpriced, dry with vibrant fruit character and palate weight complexity. And in the space of just a few months it has seamlessly and happily replaced the SJ.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED in the up to $20 market.

Beelgara Estate 2010 Rose

There are some wine styles and grape varieties that just shouldn't be expensive and one of my greatest gripes is rose. We should not have rose retailing at $15 and yet many wholesale at that price. Why? It's a pretty simplistic, no expensive wood, no bottle maturation, "get into the market as soon as it's bottled style".
So we applaud our favourite, biggest selling rose - it's back with the latest vintage and rocketing out at cellar door. It's on the sweetish side so it can handle a really big chill and with just 10.5% a/v it's perfect for a sunny Sunday picnic.

Willow Bridge 2009 Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc

This is all about complexity created by winemaker talent so in their own words "An extremely powerful expression of Sauvignon Blanc from arguably the best vineyard in a region becoming renowned for this variety. Classic varietal aromatics run the line between the tropical fruits of guava and passionfruit and those of fresh crunchy greens such as snow peas and a hint of ginger and lemongrass. A portion of wild yeast fermentation has added extra complexities of wood smoke and mineral notes and a greater level of texture to the palate than many examples of this variety." It's as far away from taste to Marlborough as it is in kms.

Tyrrell's 2008 Canberra District Shiraz

The disastrous 2008 Hunter red vintage forced Tyrrell's to look further afield for premium fruit. Not too far from home they discovered one of the best vintages ever in that most western "suburb" of Canberra: Murrumbateman.
They only scored 8 tonne which means we have a little of not much and I'm pretty confident that it's now all out there in the retail trade.

We've scored just one pallet with the sadly unfortunate total of just 52 dozen [most contain 64] It's already a candidate for Red of the Year. Drinking beautifully now with lashings of everything. I've already given it a few outings and the overwhelming consensus is WOW!

Miceli 2006 "Olivia's" Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay

Grossly underpriced at a Bin End $16. This easily has the quality to justify $25+. Here are winemaker Tony Miceli's tasting notes

Picked: 31/3/2006- 14/4/2006
Bottled: 21/3/2008

Winemaking: Hand picked and whole bunch pressed, to maintain maximum fruit and minimum extraction of hard skin tannins. Fully barrel fermented with mild juice oxidation at low temperatures to attain creamy mouthfeel and maximise palate length. This wine has undergone 100% malolactic fermentation, which we feel has added further complexity without detracting from the fruit characters. Retained on fermentation lees, in barrel, for more than a year, to allow full oak integration, complexity and depth.
Oak: 30% new. Approximately 100% French
Analysis: Alc 13.5 pH 3.50 T/A 7.1 Residual sugar <0.3 g/l

Tasting Notes:
An elegant and delicate wine with complexity and subtlety.

Brilliant pale greenish yellow. Peach, cashew and citrus, vanillan oak and struck match. Seamless mouthfeel with subtle and perfectly integrated oak, restrained and yet powerful, with fine acid balance. This wine is fermented in oak, remaining in contact with its yeast lees for a full year to develop depth and complexity.

Cellaring: With barrel and bottle age this wine is drinking beautifully now but will continue to improve for at least a further 5 years, developing honey and toastiness in addition to the delicious fruit.

Winemaker’s Comments:
Not over-oaked by this length of ageing, it shows lovely balance and integration, remaining “fine” and demonstrating the elegance and length only possible with long ripening in cool conditions.
Whilst fully ripened from a warm year, I feel this still in the slightly more restrained style and is a true expression of our climate - our “terroir”. The range of picking dates adds to our ability to retain a good acid backbone and balance the richness of very ripe fruit with the delicacy of lesser ripe components.
A long way from “mainstream” Australian Chardonnay it does not rely on brute strength, alcohol, or sugar to impress.

Peter Lehmann 2007 Chenin Blanc

We opened our tasting bottle and took the bin-end lot. Chenin Blanc, as Peel Estate have proved, is a variety that has the potential to age gracefully. But unlike the Peel this a dry white that's more aligned to Hunter semillon. It's all about the acid and here's a wine that is drinking beautifully now or easily has the legs to go another five years. There are developed citrus flavours on a firm dry palate

Trevor Jones 2009 Sticky Boots [375ml]

It's near impossible to get botrytis in the Barossa Valley. The fruit for this was from cordon cut Semillon, grown on the valley floor, from the Dorrien area, west of the Barossa Valley Highway half way between Tanunda and Nuriootpa. Which helps explain why I couldn't detect botrytis but was amazed by an extraordinary complexity that was far more than you could hope for from a simple late picked grape. It's not Noble One but it's a superb dessert wine at a ridiculous bargain basement clearance price.

Tyrrell's 2010 Lost Block Semillon

This is the Hunter Semillon style that can be enjoyed young as a sensational alternative to rieslings or sauvignon blancs. The 11.5% a/v makes it an ideal lunchtime drop and it could be a candidate for short term cellaring but I'd be more inclined to quaff it over the next 12 months. This is well priced at $18 - $20 so $12 really is a bargain.

Philip Shaw's 2009 "The Idiot" Shiraz from Orange scored three Trophies including the BIG ONE for red wines - the Gilbert Philip for best red of the show.

"Shiraz from Orange is quite unique in style compared to most other regions in Australia and is more reminiscent of the Northern Rhone, France. Our Idiot Shiraz is a young wine that has a lovely colour, deep red with some purple hues. The aroma is spicy, lifted and intense.

Kaimira Estate Nelson 2009 "Brightwater" Sauvignon Blanc

I'm not usually a fan of Kiwi sauvignon Blancs that have seen the inside of an oak barrel but this one is a beauty. And while you may like to read the maker's notes below I'll sum it up in one word - TEXTURE.
While many of us love the surplus of slurpable Marlborough sauv blancs this is a much more serious wine. It's all about the texture that makesthis so memorable and so enjoyable. It's tending towards Sancerre austerity but not quite to the extent of the recent De Bortoli offering.
We road tested the sample we were sent from NZ over three days and I can confidently assure you this will drink brilliantly over the next few years.

Don't buy it if Marlborough savvys are the only wines you've been pouring into your glass in recent times. But don't hesitate if you enjoy serious $20+ complex dry whites.

Producer's Tasting Notes
A fresh and zingy Sauvignon Blanc with aromatics including fresh herbs [fennel , mint , blackcurrant] , ripe citrus and apple. This is a dry style Sauvignon with a silky front palate and a juicy apple tartness that drives the wine through an array of vibrant flavours. The fruit weight and barrel fermented portion lend richness and intensity, while the signature minerality of Brightwater fruit gives an extra layer of complexity to the wine. Finishes long and dry with lingering passionfruit
Winemaking Notes
Fruit for this wine was sourced from several blocks on the two Estate vineyards in B ightwater. The blocks were picked at varying ripeness levels from 20º - 22º Brix, which represents a broad spectrum of ripeness levels, and therefore flavours in the finished wine. Fruit was machine harvested then crushed followed by quick and gentle pressing. This process was reductive, avoiding juice oxidation and the majority of the clear juice was cool fermented with various commercial yeasts in stainless steel tanks.Temperature control ensured the ferments were long and slow to retain primary fruit character . For this tank portion, post- fermentation lees influence was kept to a minimum to preserve frui t character. A 10% portion was fermented in old oak barrels and matured on lees for several months to give added palate weight and texture without any true oak character being imparted to the wine. The separate portions were blended and stabilized before sterile filtration and bottling in December 2009.

Couldn't agree more although I believe the acid structure has the potential to make it even more interesting in a few years time. This demands sipping and savouring. And as much as we love the slurpable Enzedders this has NO connection with them whatsover.
It's up there with serious chardonnay, riesling, semillon and viognier and full credit to De Bortoli for taking the decision to quit an excess of stock while the wine is at its brilliant peak.

Please don't buy it if you think Marlborough SBs are the bee's knees but grab as much as you can if you like the elegance and searingly dry austerity of Sancerre

With Vat 1 now wholesaling near twice this price I think the Belford has moved into bargain basement territory. This is Hunter semillon at its glorious best and the show judges agree with 3 Trophies and 7 Gold Medals. We found some great whites in 2010 but this is the best with so many layers of flavour that every sip is an adventure.
Cellar if you like but for me this is a special occasion white to celebrate with over the next few years which is what I'll be doing with my Christmas treat to my personal cellar.
There's sadly not a lot.

Haselgrove 2007 Il Padrone Sparkling Shiraz

This is a full on serious dry sparkling shiraz that easily justifies its regular $30+ price tag. The juice spent nine months in new and one year old French and American oak as well as 18 months on yeast lees. It's the perfect red for summer but just don't chill it too much.
If, like me, you love quality sparkling reds you should probably think about two 6 packs so we can bind them together for delivery purposes. And the reason we're only offering it in 6 packs is the bottle shape. Very difficult to repack in mixed dozens.

Ridgecrop Estate 2006 Trophy Chardonnay

We picked up a parcel of this to put under our label.
It won a gold medal and Trophy at the 2009 Mudgee wine show in the premium chardonnay class. It's a 2006 vintage that is in brilliant condition as evidenced by winning a trophy not so long ago. We road tested it over 3 days and it just kept improving which didn't surprise us. There's 14% a/v, lashings of rich buttery fruit, barrels of wood and most importantly plenty of acid.
This will last forever and the price is a joke. Should be $20+

This deservedly shone in the Nov-Dec 2010 issue of Winestate magazine with their top 5 star rating. First of all in the Coonawarra tasting that prompted one judge to observe it was the classiest flight of wines he's seen in years and then it romped into the best red buys under $20. Their review nailed it as "huge, dark,dense, inky wine with an "impenetrable" crimson colour. Dusty oak mingles with blackberry fruit aromas and the palate shows lashings of blueberry fruit. Quite tannic but it's balanced."
An extraordinary bargain, grossly underpriced by the maker.

Twenty years ago the SCM triple blend was the trend with makers and drinkers alike. Not sure why, maybe it just sounded like you got more for your money. "Wow! Look at this - all these grapes in just one bottle." But I CAN see a reason for this. Nicely balanced this offers some rich fruit with enough tannin and acid to keep it interesting. Just don't tell anyone who congratulates you how much you paid for it.

It's just a perfect little blend that overrides any varietal impact to create a medium dry unwooded white of crowd pleasing proportions. If I had to cater for a large function in the next 6 months, this would be the white.

Berton Vineyards 2010 The White Viognier

You've probably worked out by now that I'm not a huge fan of pinot grigio, the occasional pinot gris interests me but I love VIOGNIER.
We've just tasted a new one from Bob Berton and it's strangely, simply called The White Viognier and it has one of those weird metal labels popularised by Tempus Two as well as a crazy 14% a/v. With those negatives I wasn't expecting to be impressed but WOW what an absolutely delicious mainstream wine.
This is all about sheer drinkability and I just can't imagine anyone not enjoying it. It combines rich mouthfeel with a vibrant zing and the alcohol is not a negative. Is it an alternative to chardonnay or sauvignon blanc? The back label reckons chardy and I understand why but with no apparent wood exposure I reckon this would appeal to any dry white drinker. VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

'Gee, a merlot with some spine. Now I've seen everything. This wine won a trophy at the Perth Show. It's a more powerful and assertive merlot that you expect but still has that unmistakable fleshy wrap. Another fine example of Tempranillo! As well as its varietal redberry / blueberry aromas, there's a considerable depth of fruit on the palate which is vibrant and long. This is a wine of finesse and balance to be enjoyed in the short term. Excellent Value.

"Verdelho's great virtue is its intense fruit flavour - it makes some of the fruitiest white wines in Australia. Peel's Verdelho is dry, even though its rich fruitiness can sometimes make it taste quite sweet.

The pale straw colour is shot with green tints, always a good sign in Verdelho.

On the nose there’s pungent tropical fruit aromas, full of mango and guava. The palate is full and rich with loads of sweet fruit flavours, but finishing very dry. There’s also heaps of spice on the finish, which makes the wine complex and satisfying."

Our view: Apart from totally agreeing with Will Nairn's notes we'd just like to add that this is a truly fascinating wine. Wonderful complexity and zing on the palate and a whopping 14+% a/v which is only detectable on the back label. Very highly recommended if you're looking for something just a little different that we're confident will impress.

Wither Hills 2008 Pinot Noir

Apparently there have been serious question marks over the quality of the 2008 vintage. In which case this is a classic example of why each wine should be judged on ITS merits rather than grouped with others from a vintage which may have been less than perfect.
This is a pinot noir of enticing flavour and perfect balance with an unusually deep intense colour for the variety. It's picked up a few Gold Medals and easily delivers quality in the $30+ realm.

I particularly love this quote from Ben Glover, Wither Hills Chief Winemaker

For me, making Pinot is the holy grail! It's the prince of all the classic varieties. It is notoriously fickle, yet worth all the blood, sweat and tears when you get it right. New Zealand Pinot Noir is the next global star and Marlborough will be at the forefront of this assault.

Zema Estate 2005 Family Selection Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

It only scored 94 points in Halliday and I'd tell Jim he was dreaming. This has got to be 99. There are so many layers of flavour in this that every sip is an adventure. Given that many flagship wines are in the $100+ realm this is a joke at this price. It's the most exciting cabernet I've tasted in years.

And interesting to note that the winemaker is Greg Clayfield who was the prodigy behind brilliant Lindemans' Coonawarra's of the '80s, before the winery was taken over by a brewery.
Sad that, but this wine more than makes up for it.

I've been carrying an A4 piece of paper with Uncle Len's 10 Commandments around for years. I thought it was worthy of a retype into a more public forum so I can now relax about losing that faded sheet.
What do you reckon?

1,2 and 3 are indisputable. 3 is what keeps me inspired
4 is a bit suss but is saved by linking it with 8. That bottle a day shared with friends is what it's all about.
5 is a truly interesting concept and I'd add people who drink the same wine over and over again.
6 I know these people. It's a glorious obsession that impresses me far more than philately
7. Len wrote this before the era of pre-mixes, but he'd feel the same way about them.
8. This just about sums it up for me and combined with 3 explains why I'm in this business
9 and 10 are both decidedly suss, but to leave them out would be tantamount to censorship and 8 points doesn't quite have the same ring as 10.

The Len Evans Theory of Capacity
1. There is an awful lot of wine in the world, but there is also a lot of awful wine.
2. No sensible person drinks to excess, therefore any one person can only drink a certain amount in a lifetime.
3. There are countless flavours, nuances, shades of wine; endless varieties, regions, styles. You have neither the time nor the capacity to try them all.
4. To make the most of the time left to you, you must start by calculating your future total capacity. One bottle a day is 365 bottles a year. If your life expectancy is another 30 years, there are only 10,000-odd bottles ahead of you.
5. People who say: "You can't drink the good stuff all the time" are talking rubbish. You must drink good stuff all the time. Everytime you drink a bottle of inferior wine, it's like smashing a superior bottle against the wall. The pleasure is lost forever - you can't get that bottle back.
6. There are people who build up huge cellars, most of which they have no hope of drinking. They are foolish in over-estimating their capacity but they err on the right side and their friends love them.
7. There are also people who don't want to drink good wine, and are happy with the cheapies. I forgive them. There are others who are content with beer and spirits. I can't worry about everybody.
8. Wine is not meant to be enjoyed for its own sake; it is the key to love and laughter with friends, to the enjoyment of food, beauty and humour and art and music. Its rewards are far beyond its cost.
9. What part is wine of your life? Ten percentum: Ergo, 10 percent of your income should be spent on wine.
10. The principle should be applied to other phases of life. A disciple kissed a beautiful young lady and she demurred. He was aghast and said "Don't get the wrong idea.I've worked out I can only make love another 1343 times. I'm bloody sure I'm not wasting one on you"

Shaw Vineyard Estate 2008 Premium Riesling

This is the latest arrival from the late July Trade Days. An absolute classic Australian riesling from Murrumbatemen. Vineyards are 640m above sea level which also helps explain how good this. Incredibly complex this is a very serious wine that is worth considerably more than $18.

I'm glad a few others agree with me.

Made from 100pc Riesling, much of the unique character of this wine is developed in the vineyard from low yielding spur pruned vines. The fruit is crushed and drained, and only the free run juice is used to produce this elegant wine. The wine has a floral, limey bouquet with a long crisp and citrus dominated palate. Well balanced acids will contribute to the aging potential of this wine.

Many of the 2008 vintage rieslings offer terrific, drink-now fruit flavour and seem more advanced than usual in their ageing. These are three good, subtly different examples of that style - two from the Clare Valley and one from Canberra. Tim Adams's wine is surprisingly soft and full-bodied for such a low-alcohol wine (11.5 per cent), but it's fresh, crisp and a pleasure to drink now. Knappstein is classically floral with a juicy, delicously fresh palate. And Graeme Shaw's wine pips the other two with its deep, super vibrant flavour.

Please DO NOT BUY THIS WINE unless you are a complete viognier nutter. In which case buy a few dozen.
Or unless you love experimenting in which case grab a couple of bottles in a mixed dozen to find out what quality viognier is all about without spending a fortune.
This is a dry white with a solid 14% a/v and so much varietal fruit character that it demands an opinion. Chances are you've never tasted a white like it before and I'll guarantee you'll either love it or hate it.

And the flavour? In Zilzie's own words "jam-packed with apricot and lime marmalade, ginger spice and luscious golden fruit"

I love the stuff and think it delivers in the $30 realm but I also know a lot of you won't like it. And that's what makes wine so much fun.

This is a multi regional blend that contains juice from Coonawarra and Wrattonbully as well as its Murray Darling home territory.

A quite extraordinary, over the top drop at this price which is guaranteed to polarise opinions. It oozes a glass and a half of chocolate, moccha and berry flavours that have to be tasted to be believed.
There's a chunky 14.5% a/v that further takes it well out of the run of the mill BBQ red class.

Trevor Jones 2007 "Boots" Barossa Shiraz

This was offered to us while I was in the UK and it was the first tasting sample that hit the glasses on my return.
There wasn't much and I reckon we scored the last pallet.

Initial reaction wasn't good as there was a bit of a stink on the nose but thirty minutes later we'd changed our minds. Three days later we wished we'd been able to get more,.

This is full on Barossa Shiraz that still needs plenty of breathing time so I'd suggest it's also a very fine candidate for the cellar.
It's a rich, ripe red and at 14.5% a/v just manages to stay within the boundaries of elegance and balance. Fruit is much more blackberry than pepper but I've never had a problem with shiraz tasting like cabernet. French oak is well integrated.
If you enjoy $20 reds you'll love this.
In fact the only bad thing is the label - it's a shocker with quite a weird statement on the front. Maybe that was for the Americans.

Full rich dense red

Bouquet:
The wine has ripe cassis Cabernet Sauvignon fruit with hints of mint overlayed with predominantly French oak to give cedar and cinnamon overtones. Expect the wine to develop classic cigar box characters with age.

Palate:
Full flavoured rich fruit palate with fine long tannins, the palate has excellent richness which reflects the early warmer vintage but still retains the elegance expected of Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate finishes with a clean acidity

Food Suggestions:
A wine to be savoured in a large glass in the accompaniment of medium to full flavoured dishes. Try it with venison or quail and roasted vegetables.

Cellaring Potential:
Excellent on release and will age over the next 10-15 years. Expect the cedar and cigar box characters to develop with time.

How to open a bottle of wine with a shoe

Now this is totally pointless if you have a screw cap bottle or at the very least a corkscrew. But if, like me, you are caught in Salisbury on a Bank Holiday Sunday with a cork sealed 2008 Bordeaux that you've just grabbed in a last minute rush to Sainsbury's then you may be extremely grateful.
I suppose I could have scrounged a corkscrew from somewhere but this seemed the perfect opportunity to test this little party trick I'd seen. And yes it does work.
A few words of warning though.
The cork's exit speed is much faster in the video than I experienced. Maybe my cork was tighter or I wasn't violent enough. And choose your wall carefully. I recommend a brick external wall with no-one on the other side - otherwise they will come to see what the hell is making the noise and then challenge your sanity.

"This Shiraz honours the vision of pioneer Clare Valley winemaker Jim Barry. In 1964 Jim purchased 70 acres of prime land from Duncan McRae Wood and planted his
first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of both grapevariety and location.
The 1999 vintage was excellent. It was a warmer year than 1998, with a dry summer and good rains just before harvest that ensured the vines were in perfect health. Years of careful cellaring has benefi ted this wine immensely.

Winemaking Notes
This is a big, full-bodied Shiraz, showing colours of deep claret red colour. Primary aromas are evident on the nose - menthol, ripe satsuma, plums and mint - while secondary aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, coffee and chocolate have also developed. While winter 2010 has slightly dulled the savvy frenzy of summer, I suspect seasonally adjusted figures would show no decrease in demand.
The latest star to arrive is the Crayfish Bay 2009 release. We've previously offered the 2008 which was a pleasant little drop but this current release is on a considerably higher level and rivals anything under $20.
The sometimes cloying tropical fruit character in this genre has been cut back to a level where it is now in perfect harmony with a refreshingly crisp acid zing. It's made by one of the high profile Marlborough makers and I suspect is available under their own label at a considerably higher price

It's way past its Best Before date [October, 09] but with this type of beer what does it matter? It's probably improving. It's nowhere near as dry as Guinness but I wouldn't describe it as a sweet stout. This is very much a winter beer that you store on top of the fridge at this time of year - why would you want to dull the intense flavour?.

Kilikanoon Killerman's Run 2006 Clare Valley Shiraz Grenache

In a little over 10 years Kilikanoon has established itself as one of the finest producers in SA's Clare Valley. Halliday rates it as THE best and Parker of the Advocate loves Kevin Mitchell's work as well.
This is final stock from a cancelled UK export order and you've got to wonder what those silly poms were thinking.
But their loss is our gain particularly as we can offer it to you under our regular wholesale price. Why? Because it has the UK export label on it which doesn't declare Standard Drinks.
I know some of us get a little nervous with grenache. It can sometimes have a stalky character which, if too pronounced, can make the wine disjointedly unattractive. But this has none of that. In fact this is a superbly balanced seamless midweight red that delivers well over the $20 mark.
The dazzling vibrant colour hints at definite cellaring potential and this was confirmed by our three days of enjoying the tasting sample. Alcohol is 14.5% [about 8.7 standard drinks] and it's not overt because it is just so well balanced. There's plenty of spicy fruit kicking along throughout the palate supported by some nice little tannins. One of those reds that I couldn't imagine anyone not enjoying. Extraordinary value.

Like the Kirrihill shiraz it's a bargain and is composed of fruit from a variety of vineyards. In fact the back label makes an interesting point that the Clare Valley shouldn't be regarded simplistically as a single region as it contains 5 distinct sub districts with quite different profiles.
Like the shiraz this is a rich, rounded fruit driven red that's only spent a mere 6 months on a mix of French and American oak.
Cellar for 5 years or so by all means but this one is ready to enjoy now.

EXTREME BARGAIN BIN END.
There are some wines that crop up that are absolute no-brainers. They are so good and so undervalued that I know we'll sell whatever we have. Even better when they are so easy to describe.
A little while ago 160 dozen of a NZ sauvignon blanc hit the Sydney market at a fraction of its wholesale price. We tasted it at midday Thursday and took the lot - that was left. Normal retail $20+.
It's a label associated with Matahiwi and even more closely with winemaker Jane Cooper. It's 2007 and has back label notes that recommend drinking by last year. How wrong can they be?

This is your full on old fashioned Kiwi sauvignon blanc that is more aligned with Sancerre than your everyday fruit salad 2008 Marlborough release. Consequently it won't be to everyone's taste. This one's all about acid, austerity, capsicum, paspalum and asparagus. I don't normally talk too much in those terms but this is what defines this wine and you know full well whether you'll like it or not. I think its sensational but I also really enjoy the compete opposite, currently fashionable, tropical fruit salad style.

And for those who are wondering, Wairarapa is to the east of Wellington on the North Island of NZ which makes it about 130km east of Marlborough and just a little bit north.

The winemaker's notes are spot on with the only thing I'd challenge being drinking time frame. It's just right for drinking now and at $13 this is a bargain

Tyrrell's 2009 Fordwich Verdeho

We were first impressed by the 2007 release and here are my notes from February 2008: "This is from the same quality/price range as the Rufus Stones and Brokenbacks so while we expected a top wine we didn't know what to expect in terms of a verdelho. It's a funny old grape which rarely has the zing of riesling, complexity of chardonnay or intensity of sauvignon blanc. This though is up there with the best we've tasted with lashings of fruit salad and a delicious balancing crisp acidity. If you enjoy quality whites and you're looking for something different, this is very highly recommended."
This is now the 2009 vintage and the only change has been the price - it's come down from $18.
A quality white without blowing the budget.

Tyrrell's 2006 Brokenback Shiraz

I am forever grateful to Helen from Tyrrells who showed us the 2004 vintage of this wine in June 2007. Once again here are my notes:
"The nose is unmistakeable, classic earthy Hunter. I've never been comfortable with the "sweaty saddle" adjective as to me it's not a particularly compelling endorsement. This one has it but in an attractive appealing way that I've rarely encountered.
The earthiness continues on the palate but there is none of the dirt stink that characterises so many Hunter shiraz. This also offers a rich roundness of fruit that carries on to an incredible length. This is an outstanding red that is a must for lovers of Hunter quality and an absolute must for anyone who's never been convinced. Enjoy now or confidently cellar."
This was the wine that rekindled my enthusiasm for Hunter reds and let me tell you that this 2006 release is even better. The label is a huge improvement and the stuff inside the bottle is sensational. $15 is ridiculous.

Mt Monster 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon

On first glance it may appear to be a wacky made up name but there is definitely a Mt Monster vineyard and winery which you can find 300km south east of Adelaide.
The Bryson family have been farming in South Australia for over 150 years. Wine is a more recent enterprise but it still very much a family business that utilises the winemaking talents of Ben Riggs. Yes, it's that ubiquitous Mr Riggs who has a well deserved reputation as a very talented winemaker.
There are quite a few things that I REALLY like about their two current release reds. For starters they taste like their variety should and for cabernet, in particular, that's a rare thing nowadays. They are both extremely user friendly and while short term cellaring is an option they are ready to enjoy now. Fruit dominates rather than wood and there are nice tannins and acids supporting the fruit. And best of all they are brilliant value.
Not a huge fan of the label but as we all know, it's the stuff inside the bottle that counts.

Rockridge 2009 Watervale Riesling

Up to about 10 years ago it was easy to rave about Riesling and smugly buy up the bargains because the variety offered such great value compared to chardonnay. But those days are long gone and I wondered if I'd ever find another great value riesling that wasn't a producer's stuff up [like Simon Pemberton Pearse and the unlabelled Palandri].

Well I have and it's from Watervale, that classic riesling region, in South Australia's Clare Valley. The intensity on the nose is almost overwhelming and the same fruit flavour carries through on the palate. Which goes on and on and on with lovely crisp acidity completing the experience.
This doesn't have the steely minerality that some of you love. This one's all about intense fruit in the citrus/honeysuckle spectrum. While it has the acidity to warrant cellaring I can't see the point. This is THE wine for this summer if you're a little bit over sauvignon blancs. It has the flavour to both handle a serious chill and justify a $20+ price tag.

Buller 2007 Beverford Durif

Please don't be fooled by the price of this. It's a very classy, quality red wine that has been grossly underpriced by its maker. [Something that Buller also do with their fortifieds].
Colour is a dazzling deep purple and there's enticing sweet fruit on the nose and then the really interesting stuff starts. I often write about "quality fruit supported by underlying tannins". But this is all about really appealing tannins supported by underlying fruit. It may sound weird but it works beautifully. Alcohol is 15% but there's no hint of overextraction and it's just not an issue with this one
Three days after opening the wine is drinking even better and I suspect the back label "cellar to 2012" recommendation may be well short of the mark. I'm whacking some in the cellar to see how it evolves.
